Potato fields

Night frost can be expected throughout all the summer months in these areas. The potato is a plant that does not survive frost, but because of its importance in maintaining a healthy diet, the people in the icy north search for a way to protect it from the cold. The temperature in water changes slower than the temperature in the air. This makes the fields close to the lake less prone to night frost. Along the shores of Blokkodden the farms nearby found a shared area to grow potatoes. Combined there were seven small potato fields at the tip of the peninsula, in the west. Because the fields were gathered in a relatively small area, the farmers could cooperate in spreading smoke on the fields when it got colder in the late summer.
